24 Hours in Valletta: A Walk Through Living History

You go to cities and you get to cities. The second category also belongs to the small but mighty capital of Malta Valletta.

It is hard to find a capital this small, not even a square kilometer, but every cobblestone, balcony and fortress wall tells a story. One day here is a living museum experience, but with cafes, music and sea breezes on every corner.

Note: If you are travelling for a day then you can book Heathrow airport cheap parking and keep your vehicle safe.

Morning: The city wakes up

Begin your day in a local cafe with a hot pastizz, a flaky ricotta filled pastry of Malta. As the city wakes up, you sit outside and the church bells will be fighting with seagulls.

Walking a few minutes, you will see St. John’s Co-Cathedral whose unappealing facade conceals a jaw-dropping Baroque interior.

Afternoon: Tales in the Stones

The streets of Valletta shine in the Mediterranean sun in the middle of the day. Climb up republic street where grand palaces constructed by the Knights of St. John are placed along the road.

Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens to have panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. At noon they may fire the cannons, but the real display is the view of centuries-old bastions that touch the turquoise sea.

Evening: Magic Hour

Valletta becomes romantic on the mellowing day. There is a honey-gold limestone glow on the buildings in the setting sun. Stroll down the side streets which are narrow and where flower pots hang and the washing lines flutter.

Dinner could be fresh seafood in a restaurant with a view of the harbor, wine and platters in a bistro in a secluded corner. Anyway, linger. Valletta is to be leisurely enjoyed.

Night: History In Life

Close your 24 hours at the waterfront where city lights play in the water. Valletta is not a museum piece, it is living, breathing and friendly. Never can a day suffice - and then enough to come under its spell.
