A Weekend in Vienna: What to See and Skip

One of those cities that appear to be too smooth at first sight is Vienna. Great palaces, fancy cafes, music in the streets in the classical style--it is as though you were in a postcard.

However, any weekend trip to Vienna demands some form of selectiveness. There are things that one cannot forget. Others? Beautiful, and, however, can be skipped when you want to hurry up.

It is my plain, straightforward, no-hurry guide to what is worth your time--and what you can safely recommend.

What to See

Begin with the historic centre. The inner city of Vienna is small, easy to walk through, and full of architectural drama. St. Stephen's Cathedral is impeccable. Enter the building, and stare up at the size and quietness.

And even when you are not, as you usually are, a cathedral person, this one is worth your time.

It is worth going to Schonbrunn Palace; however, do it smart. The palace is not bad, but it is the gardens that are the true delight. I did not take on the lengthy trip around the interior and instead took a stroll outside, approaching the Gloriette to enjoy panoramic views of the city. It was relaxed and not in a hurry, ideal for making a quick visit.

Make time for a classic cafe. This isn't optional in Vienna. Having a break in a cafe, sipping a coffee, and having a cake is not a break but rather a culture. Cafe Central is well frequented because there is a reason, but even a calmer cafe in the neighbourhood will bring you the same kind of slowness and elegance.

Note: Don’t forget to check Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 and book according to your travel needs.

What You Can Skip

Too many museums. Vienna boasts of museums of international standards, and attempting to look at a few of them in a single weekend is tiring. Choose one that you really care about and drop the others. You'll enjoy it more. The Vienna State Opera tour. This can be expedient and too much of a thing unless you are an opera enthusiast.
